Tree Lopping Vs Tree Pruning
Tree Lopping is a common practice whereby the tree is lopped or "topped" for the purpose of reducing the overall canopy size or to rejuvenate growth. Lopping a tree back to a trunk and a few large limbs is not recommended as this seriously affects the appearance and long-term structure of the tree.
After a few months, the regrowth of a lopped tree is upright, bushy and vigorous. The tree will never regain it's natural shape, and will suffer from weakly attached regrowth that is susceptible to breaking off during storms and strong wind. A lopped tree will require constant maintenance, as the irregular and unstable regrowth will require constant removal. Lopping also has the potential of shortening the life of the tree, due to the increase in probability of disease and pest infestation.
Tree lopping places a tree under considerable stress. With substantial sections of the canopy removed, the tree's ability to create food and energy is reduced, which is detrimental to health and natutal growth. Weak, newly formed branches can fall at any time, which presents serious safety issues and risks of property damage or injury.
